Catering: How to Get More for Less at Your Wedding

Guest Post by Frankie Burns of LowCountry Barbecue

When it comes to your wedding reception, cateringis one of the most important aspects. The food is something your guests will continueto talk about for weeks following and can be a huge factor in how well yourwedding unfolds. It’s no secret, however, that the catering is one of the mostexpensive undertakings. The average amount of money spent on food is about$50-$90 per head, butthis cost depends on the type of food, number of courses and the caterers. Regardless, mostbrides and grooms overspend on catering, so here are three great tips on how tomanage your costs within your spending limit.

Incorporate Economical Food Choices
Whenit comes time to plan your menu, consider balancing out expensive andinexpensive food. While having a full menu comprised of luxury food items maybe your first choice, incorporating economical food choices may be the bestroute to take, especially if you are preparing to have a large crowd. This iswill not only ensure that you have plenty food to serve for less of the cost, but you will feel good knowing you accommodated all your guests while stickingto your budget.

Organizethe Correct Amounts
For many brides and grooms, estimating the howmuch food you will need to have prepared is nearly impossible. With last minutecancellations and impromptu invites, it’s no wonder wedding catering can getexpensive- and wasteful.  Estimating afew extra rounds of hoursde oeuvres in case two or three additional guests arrive is ideal, but goingbeyond that is the easiest way to pay for too much food that will go uneaten.

Take Advantage of Natural Resources
Welcoming the outdoors and takingadvantage of natural resources is a great way to get more for less. Utilizingfree resources, like having an outdoor venue, not only gives your guests achance to mingle in the fresh air, but it also a great way to lower some ofyour catering costs so you can splurge in other areas of your wedding. Not tomention, outdoor weddings boast many economical food opportunities-you cangrill specialty meats or indulge in some home style barbecue.
While the food is one of the bestdeterminants of a successful wedding, you don’t have to overspend on food thatwon’t even be eaten. Ultimately, this is your special day, so satisfying yourguests while maintaining your budget will create the best outcome for both youand your guests. By following these tips you will be able to get way more outof your catering, which will ultimately enable you to splurge on more importantaspects- like the honeymoon!

Your DIY Wedding Bouquet

                             Guest Post by Breanna Gunn

So you’re being frugal about your wedding. Good for you! Ihad less than $3000 available for my big day, which meant that my entire day was DIY. And that was before DIY weddings werecool. There are lots of wonderful tutorials out there for making all kinds ofthings...but I have yet to find one for flowers that doesn’t terrify me.
So I’m here to help. Your wedding flowers make a hugestatement about who you are, and they only take about three hours. Of course,if you choose to do this, those three hours are going to be spent workingreally hard the day before your wedding.
Let’s start, shall we?

Buying Your Flowers

The first thing that you’re going to need are flowers. Thereare a number of places you can acquire them, including big box stores, florists, online, and your back yard. One thing that I learned was that youcannot mention the words ‘wedding’ (or anything related) if you want to get agood deal and not pick the flowers yourself.
Go and inquire about pricing for the quantity and types offlowers (don’t forget filler!!) that you want, and then ask about discounts.DIY is all about being frugal, remember.
Once you’ve secured your blooms, schedule their deliverythe day before your big day. Morning would be awesome. Then you need to find:
1. Florist tape
2. Florist pins
3. SHARP scissors
4. Ribbon
5. Florist wire
6. Accents (stones, sparkles...you get the idea)

Prepare Your Blooms

First of all, get some help. This task is easiest with 2 to3 people. Then...
Trim and feed your flowers. What this means is that you needto take off any leaves, and trim the stems on a diagonal. This is easiest ifyou set up an assembly line at your kitchen sink.
Once they’ve been trimmed, place the flowers into 5 gallonbuckets filled with room temperature water. This will ensure that they do notwilt, and that they open just a little. If you have a few blooms that you donot want to open further (think daisies), use ice water or stick the entirebucket in the fridge.

Assemble Your Bouquet

Once you’re all trimmed and watered, get set up to assembleyour bouquet. Make sure you have more blooms than you think you’ll need...got‘em? Then let’s get on with the fun stuff!
To assemble your bouquet:
1. Have your tape, scissors, and wire handy.
2. Carefully choose 5-10 blooms to start your bouquet.
3. Arrange them in a half-ball shape, and tape themtogether. If you want them to really be secure, use a piece of florist wire, and stick it through the stems.
4. Now for the fun...continue adding blooms until youachieve the look you want, taping and wiring as you go.
5. Got saggy blooms? Use the florist wire to perk them up!Stick the end of the wire just below the head of the flower, and wrap theremainder of the wire around the stem, going down to help hold it upright. Thenadd it to your bouquet!
6. Once you’ve finished adding flowers, tape the entirebouquet between 2 and 4 inches.
7. Wrap a ribbon around the bouquet to hide the tape, andembellish with florist pins or glue on rhinestones and the like.

Then, admire your handiwork!!

3 Ways for Wedding Cost Cutting

Celebrating the marriage does not need to spend too expensive. With an affordable cost, weddings can also be festive and memorable. Do not be until after the wedding you just have to pay off the debts of confusion here and there. Some of these tips can be applied to minimize expenditures swell party.

Dividing the financial burden. Nowdays, wedding expenses are charged to the parents of the woman alone? Although the full value of tradition, but you can judge also that it is very unfair. So let's just say the truth in the family: wedding a family event involving two large families. So, why not share it with?

Reduce spending party. It is not as difficult as imagined. The easiest way is to cut the number of guests invited. Determine the location of the honeymoon is also a good way to cut wedding costs. If you do not want the cost of a wedding is too big, go honeymoon in a place not too far from your city.

In addition, if you use the services of wedding organizer (WO), try to bargain first. If possible, choose a time when not many people get married. Thus WO, catering, documentation, or a flower shop, will provide cost estimates are not very expensive compared to current marriage season.

Do not owe. Try to pay off all your wedding needs. You certainly do not want to go bankrupt because of debt after the honeymoon period passes. It may sound simple, but do not make it a habit to get into debt. Pay off all your expenses. If you can not afford to pay in cash all costs, meaning that financially you do not need to create a massive celebration. But again, it can be overcome with a simple wedding celebration, or delay it for a while first marriage to your savings enough.

Spring 2012 Trends

I look forward to attending the bridal market each season.  Not only it is fun to see what each designer is offering, I am always fascinated by the fashion trends.   I don't believe that we should be a slave to trends but they seem to indicate what is in demand by brides.  Good or bad, trends develop around celebrities and highly publicized weddings.  No doubt that the royal wedding is having an impact on brides desires for their big day.

Straps and Sleeves

There is a an increase in gowns offered with straps and sleeves: this trend has caught on and is being offered by most designers. Most gowns with sleeves and straps are made of lace. This soft romantic style continues to grow in popularity.

Lingerie Look
I wasn't sure how well this style would catch on when I saw it on the runway about a year ago, but I can say that its more popular than ever.  The lingerie look, with it's defined boning and see through panel  from the bust to waist is flirtatious.

Color

Each season designers include a touch of color to a limit number of gowns.  Tones that have been popular include ivory lace over champagne or gold.  Pale pink gowns also popped up on the runway with Pronovias producing a few gowns with this color option.  WTOO by Watters Bridal has a soft oatmeal hue and a new gray.

Bling

It seemed for the last few years, brides were interested in understated style.  Although there are plenty of simple gowns to chose from, there was more bling than I have seen in the last few seasons.  Brides who want to sparkle on their wedding day will have plenty to choose from.

Texture

Texture made its way on to the runway last season, but every designer has added additional gowns with flange, ruffles, petals and flowers.

There is much for brides to look forward to in the coming year.

Best wishes,

Jenny and staff

How to Pick Wedding Favors

Guest Post by Rebecca Parker

So he asked you to marry him, you said yes,and now you have all kinds of plans to make. From the cake, to the reception hall, all the decisions can get youcaught up in the whirlwind of romance. One of the things on your to-do list is picking wedding favors for thereception.  The reception itself is ofteneven bigger than the ceremony, so you may feel pressured to pick somethingeveryone will like.  Here are some greatideas for picking out wedding favors.

PersonalizedFavors
One way many brides and grooms like topersonalize their reception is by choosing favors that incorporate their namesinto them.  Wedding favors can beanything you want them to be, so offering up a little something as a memento ofyour special day is just what many couples want.  You might even want to include a littlepersonalized message from the two of you. There is no limit to what you can do as long as you stay within yourbudget constraints.

Pre-madeFavors Vs. Homemade Favors
Another question many brides ask is whetherthey should make the favors themselves. This is entirely a matter of preference. If everyone knows you like to make candles or little handmade gifts, then making your own favors is the perfect way to add some personality into yourspecial day.  However, if you have neverfelt yourself to be the artsy craftsy type, then there’s no need to forceit.  Chances are, you’ll just end upfeeling rushed and frustrated if you try to force yourself into figuring outhow to make something.

UniqueIdeas for Wedding Favors
Brides who really want their wedding favorsto stand out do have some options if they aren’t into making handmade thingsthemselves.  For example, you might handout a bag of flower seeds to symbolize your future together and the beauty thatwill come from it.
If money is not an option, then yourwedding favors can be as unique as you are. If you want your guests to be able to use your favors, then think ofanything that will remind them of you and still be useful to them.  You might want to hand out coffee mugs, scented soaps, or personalized fans.  Ifyou’re a chef, then heart-shaped measuring spoons are a very unique idea.

ThemedFavors
If you’re still having trouble choosingwedding favors, then the simplest thing to do is pick something that matchesyour theme.  For example, you might havesome type of small container filled with a candy that you like and tied with aribbon that matches your wedding colors. It’s quick, simple, and it takes care of the wedding favor question.  Then you can mark one more thing off thatlist!
